NSW Alcohol Interlock Program
This program is designed to allow drink driving offenders to earn back their licence. Transport for NSW (TfNSW) administers the alcohol interlock program.

Completing the NSW Program & Removal Process
You must complete the full period in the Alcohol Interlock Program as specified by Transport for NSW.
In the last 6 months of your interlock period, you must demonstrate that you can separate drinking and driving. Failed breath tests (even at low range) can lead to extension of the program.
Transport for NSW will advise you in writing when your interlock participation period has been completed. This letter will need to be shown to your interlock agent before your interlock device can be removed.

- Don’t place the device on the floor, out of sight/ear shot, or where it may be damaged.
- Make sure that it is securely in its holder whenever the car is moving
- Do not circumvent, tamper, or misuse the device.
- Regularly calibrate your device by bringing it in for servicing.

The NSW interlock program aims to reduce drink‑driving deaths and injuries. It helps offenders separate drinking from driving by keeping them in the licensing system under close monitoring. An interlock device prevents the engine from starting if alcohol is detected.
Drink‑driving offenders who want to hold a NSW licence may be required to join the Alcohol Interlock Program, including those convicted of mid or high‑range PCA, repeat drink‑driving, or refusing a breath test. Interstate offenders seeking a NSW licence may also be required to participate.
Transport for NSW will advise you in writing if you need to have an interlock device installed. The NSW ignition interlock program requires a breath sample to be provided before the vehicle’s ignition can be engaged. If alcohol is detected, the vehicle will not start. The device also requests rolling retests at random intervals while the vehicle is in motion to ensure the drivers compliance to the program throughout their journey. You must pull over to complete the rolling test.
The duration of the NSW interlock program depends on the specific offence committed. Periods typically range from 12 to 48 months, though they can be extended if the participant fails to comply with program requirements.
The making of an interlock order for serious drink driving offences is mandatory in NSW. If you receive an interlock order and do not enter the interlock program, you will be disqualified from holding a licence for 5 years.
Under the conditions of an interlock licence, you are only permitted to operate vehicles that have been fitted with an approved ignition interlock device. This requirement applies to any motor vehicle you drive, regardless of whether it is a passenger car, motorcycle or heavy vehicle.
NSW learner licence holders are not required to drive with an interlock device. If you receive an interlock order, you will not be eligible to hold a motorbike rider learner licence in NSW until you have completed the program.
