ACT Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program

Australian Capital Territory’s Alcohol Ignition Interlock Program commenced on 17th of June 2014.  The ACT Road Transport Authority (RTA) administers the alcohol interlock program.

Smart Start Interlocks is an approved alcohol ignition interlock supplier for the alcohol ignition interlock program in ACT.

Completing the ACT Program & Removal Process

You will need to contact the Road Transport Authority after your interlock period has finished. If your final 3 months of the interlock period are free of breaches and you have met any other compliance requirements, the interlock condition on your licence can be removed.

Device Information

Keep your alcohol interlock device in top condition by observing the following:

  • Don’t place the device on the floor, out of sight/ear shot, or where it may be damaged.
  • Make sure that it is securely in its holder whenever the car is moving
  • Do not circumvent, tamper, or misuse the device.
  • Regularly calibrate your device by bringing it in for servicing.

Managed by Access Canberra, the ACT ignition interlock program is a legislation-mandated safety scheme that aims to keep local roads safe. It involves fitting a vehicle with a breath testing device that prevents it from starting if alcohol is detected.

The ACT interlock program is compulsory for individuals convicted of a high-range drink driving offence, refusing a breath or blood sample or have multiple alcohol-related convictions within a specific timeframe.

The RTA is provided with reports of your compliance with the interlock program conditions over the term of the interlock period. The RTAs decision to remove the ‘I’ condition will be based on this report and any other relevant information.

The duration of the ACT ignition interlock program depends on the specific offence committed, with a minimum period of six months generally required. To complete the program, you must not have received a violation in the final three months of your interlock period.

Yes, if you are disqualified by a court of a high-range drink driving offence, a refusal to provide a breath or blood sample or have multiple alcohol-related convictions within a specific timeframe, you must participate in the ignition interlock program.
