FAQs

An alcohol ignition interlock device is connected to a vehicle’s ignition system and requires the driver to provide a breath sample before the engine can start. If the device detects alcohol above the set limit, the vehicle will not start. Periodic “rolling retests” may also be required while driving to confirm a 0.0 BAC. An interlocks prevents driving if alcohol is detected and help participants complete their mandatory interlock programs safely and responsibly.

In Australia, individuals convicted of drink driving offences are often required to install an alcohol ignition interlock device as part of a state-mandated interlock program.

The length and conditions of the program vary by state or territory. Participants must install the device in any vehicle they drive and maintain compliance through regular servicing and data reporting.

Yes. While most customer who install an interlock are part of mandatory programs, anyone can choose to install an alcohol ignition interlock voluntarily. Some families or employers choose to use these devices as an added safety measure.

Modern alcohol ignition interlock devices are highly accurate and use advanced fuel cell sensor technology to measure blood alcohol concentration (BAC). This technology allows for reliable readings. All Smart Start interlocks are certified to Australian and CENELEC European Standards, meeting strict accuracy and safety requirements.

If an alcohol ignition interlock detects alcohol above the permitted limit, the vehicle will not start. The event is recorded in the device’s memory and will be reported to your state authority as part of your interlock program. Repeated failed tests can extend the program duration.  For rolling retests while driving, the device will safely alert you to provide another sample; if failed, it will record the event but will note shut off the engine while in motion.
